With Old Man Winter already showing serious signs of starting his annual residency, the importance of having proper outerwear for the elements cannot be overstated. When we say “elements,” we mean socially just as much as we mean weather-related.
Enter NINOX, a designer menswear company in Boulder, Colorado.
So why NINOX and why now? Co-founder Greg Casals explains that there is a large gap in the market between technical outdoor gear and casual lifestyle apparel. “The growth in men’s casual apparel is not just a fashion trend, it is a lifestyle trend. There are many athletic brands that are entering into the lifestyle sector but NINOX is different in that we are beginning in the lifestyle sector of the market and applying performance fabrics to modernized designs.”
Casals goes on to add that NINOX is for the consumer that has graduated from wearing the likes of North Face or Patagonia to work or casual settings and wants a more sophisticated look. The idea is that one could wear something out on the town or wear the same thing on a hike because they’re classically cut with minimal logos, can be dressed up or down and thereby simplifying your wardrobe.
One of the other distinct qualities of the clothing is its durability. As Casals cites, because they use the same production partners that many of the best performance gear companies use, the quality is second to none. “We are also using the finest performance fabrics available and we offer a lifetime guarantee on the product because of our confidence in the construction of it. While that is common in the outdoor gear industry, you won’t see that in fashion brands.”
The item that has particularly caught our eye is The Bennett.
The Bennett is made from wool bonded with fleece by Swiss fabric maker Schoeller. The wool is infused with stretch for movement and the fleece keeps the warmth in as well as allowing the fabric to breath. The fabric is wind resistant, water repellant and is treated with a special stain repellant finish that prevents stains from adhering to the jacket. There are many pockets including hand warmers, flap pockets and zipper pockets to stash your items.
The Bennett can be dressed up or dressed down so that you can wear it to work or out to dinner. The styling has field jacket and alpine influences but with the technical properties, it wears like a soft shell.
You can see the entire line at www.ninox.cc. They offer free shipping and an easy exchange and return policy. As far as brick and mortar goes, NINOX has entered into agreements with Nod & Rose in Boulder and Armitage and McMillan in Denver while Walker Brothers has also picked up the line. There are also plans to launch the first NINOX retail store sometime in 2015.
