Watch My Back

The “big uglies,” as they’re affectionately known as in the football ranks are those behemoth offensive linemen up front who spend sixty minutes every game crashing into each other. The quarterback, in particular, wants to keep them happy so they’ll block for him on a regular basis. You can do this with food – usually hundreds of dollars worth at steakhouses and the like. At the end of the season, you can also show one’s appreciation with lavish gifts as another form of “Thank you.”

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ Ben Roethlisberger did just that.

According to ESPN, Big Ben recently bought each member of the Pittsburgh’s offensive line individual platinum series watches from Swiss manufacturer Omega – a well deserved gift for a unit that has allowed Roethlisberger to get sacked just 20 times in 11 games. The offensive line’s protection also help send Roethlisberger to his fourth Pro Bowl, while also paving the way for the Steelers’ rushing attack, ranked in the NFL’s top 10 in the NFL heading into the final game of the regular season.

Starting right tackle Marcus Gilbert summed it up perfectly, “It’s a great Christmas, especially for me, getting that luxury watch from Big Ben. We take care of him and he’s always done a good job taking care of his line. That’s why we like to go to battle for him every week.”

We wonder what Ben will get his protectors next season.
