Giannis’s Nike Shoe
The Greek Freak is getting a sneak.
Giannis Antetokounmpo and his rise in the NBA as one of the league’s premiere superstars has not only re-signed with Nike, but it’s also being reported that the Milwaukee Bucks power forward will be getting a signature shoe from the Swoosh. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
With the process of designing a signature shoe typically a 14-to-18 month timeline, it is likely that the soonest a “Giannis 1” sneaker would release would be during the fall or holiday seasons of 2019, according to insiders.
Antetokounmpo was a sneaker “free agent” with his 4-year deal with Nike expiring in October, so competitors like Adidas and Chinese footwear company Li-Ning were putting on a full court press for his business. The Greek Freak’s popularity has spread far from Wisconsin, where data from Fanatics reveal that his #34 Milwaukee jersey is third in the league this year in jersey sales.
Antetokounmpo’s agent, Alex Saratsis, told ESPN, “I’ve always said that I think he’s one of those guys that has the potential to transcend his market. I think he’s showing that he can do that. I think he’s one of the few players that could have a truly global appeal.”
