Porsche Has A New Number
Porsche Boxters and Cayman coupes, two of the German automaker’s mid-engine models, will be carrying the 718 moniker when they undergo their mid-cycle update in 2016. The models will be called the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman and both will use turbocharged four-cylinder engines and should be available come 2017.
The history of the 718 name with four-cylinder power dates back to 1957 through 1962 when the model competed in and won several races powered by a flat four-cylinder engine. The Boxster and Cayman have become the successors to that era, while possessing 286 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, while a 2.5-liter, likely slated for S models, should make 360 hp and 347 lb-ft of torque.
In addition, the 718 Boxter and the 718 Cayman will share more similarities than ever, both visually and mechanically, with the Boxter designated as the more premium model.
Timing and pricing for the new four-cylinder 718s has not yet been released.
